SNACKS FOR KIDS

My friend Laura is wondering what my kids eat for snacks and I actually also need some help so I will post the few things I have found and I hope everyone will post healthy snacks that they feed their kids.

1. Fruit Leather (I get mine at Costco, it's cheaper. It is 100% fruit, no added sugar)

2. Z-Bar (CLIF bar for kids....There is some sugar in these but I justify it a bit. It has lots of other great things in it. These are actually the only snack that is approved in Cali for Senate Bill 19 (?). They are trying to get healthier snacks for kids. Way to go Cali!!)

3. Applesauce (100% apples + Vit C....no added sugar)

4. Fruit (apples, grapes, clementines, bananas, kiwi, watermelon, etc.)

5. Nuts (almonds and walnuts mostly)

6. Crackers - TLC (tasty little crackers made by Kashi)

7. Cereal - Wheat Chex, Cheerios, or Grape nuts (these all have a little added sugar)

8. String Cheese

Okay this is all I can think of right now. Any other ideas? I haven't found any raw veggies that my kids like to snack on so I would love any ideas here.

Seems like our kids have similar taste buds. You pretty much summed up all our snacks. I just bought me a box of fruit leather . . .Too bad I love to eat them too. My kids love cucumbers and avacados. Wierd Huh! I have also discovered Boca Chicken Nuggets and Chicken patties . . . Delicious. My kids love those too.

You guys are both so darn healthy! I need to learn from you! I feel like a porker/junkie compared to you two! Way to go! I am going to remember this list of healthy snacks and make Haley eat them!

Man, you are doing awesome with foods your kids will eat. Something we all love is this smoothie recipe. It's real easy and fast but also super healthy.

1/2 c Dannon plain, non-fat yogurt
1 c frozen strawberries
1/4 c blueberries
1/2 bananna

Blend everything up till smooth. It only has about 18 grams of carbs if you eat the entire thing,(it makes a lot).

Back to your question on my BLOG, yes we will be finding out the secret identity of this kid. I'm way too impatient and controlling to wait. I wish I could do it but alas, not I.

P.S. I'll be in Kennewick a week from tomorrow. We'll have to get together.

Thanks for this post. That's pretty much what my kids eat too(minus the fruit leather and kashi)- I'll have to try those. As for vegetables- EDAMAME SOY BEANS!!! I have an entire post on this. We love these. They come in a huge bag at COstco, take 3 minutes to prepare, are loaded with fiber and protein, and the kids love popping them out of their pod. They also love baby carrots, but I have to get the really skinny little ones. And avocados. I put thin slices of avocado on their toast with a little salt and thin sliced cheese. Here's my new question for you: What do you eat for dinner?? Do you use anything out of a can or box or is it all fresh?? Thanks. I love the advice.

Thanks for list. I'm gonna get me some of that fruit leather. Funny.....I was searching for snack ideas on the internet before I read your blog the other day.

adding to the list:

healthful yogurt with granola or cereal and fresh fruit (we like trader joes or brown cow nonfat vanilla--do you have TJ's in WA?)

cottage cheese with peaches/fruit cocktail/pears

healthy pretzels

pirates booty or veggie booty

brown rice cakes with healthy peanut butter and a little honey

good ole' carrot sticks

celery with peanut butter

whole wheat tortillas, plain (fav. of my kids)

my kids also love morning star breakfast patties (fake sausage) (you can add a poached egg on a whole wheat english muffin with a little cheese, too)

we also add wheat germ to our smoothies for a little extra boost

that's all that comes to mind right now

I really enjoyed this post (found you from Laura's blog). My kids love yogurt. I also like to use the Hidden Valley Ranch packets with fat free cottage cheese to make veggie dip (you can also use sour cream). This dip is healthy, very low fat, and helps with getting veggies eaten.

oh, whole wheat/multi-grain bagels with cream cheese is also a fav.

I forgot something! Frozen strawberries and blueberries from Costco. Blend them up with Crystal Light Lemonade or pink lemonade and make a really think smoothie, almost like sorbet. Delicious and makes a great healthy treat!

Hey Tara! Your snacks sound good! My kids like apple slices(peeled), raisins and "baby" carrots. When we want a little sweetness we go for Quaker mini delights 90 calorie cookie packs. I hope you are well, I'd love to get back in touch with you!

Ok - so this is probably a way old post, but I'm just getting around to updating myself with everyone's blogs! I loved this post of yours, and had to comment. Some of my boys' favorite snacks are apple slices with creamy peanutbutter spread on them, then we stick raisins in the peanutbutter - we call them "apple-smiles". Another one we LOVE is yogurt with granola mixed in.
